Within a very intense, compressed period of time, participants develop the perceptual skills necessary for drawing by learning to use the spatial, global, nonverbal Right Brain. The Left Brain reduces our view of the world to labels and symbols. But when the Left Brain is unaware of what the Right Brain is doing, then the mind is free to really SEE relationships and to integrate these relationships into a whole. But the five intensive days are not merely about learning to see, they are about increasingly complex Right Brain exercises that train the brain muscle to feel what's really there. At RBR you are not just taking a workshop, you are LIVING AN EXPERIENCE and once your muscles are stretched and expanded, they will never forget this experience.

day1.jpgday2..jpgday3.jpgday4.jpgday5.jpg

Day 1
The Perception of Edges
Taught by contour drawing. Traing your hand to move with your eye.

Day 2
The Perception of Space
Taught by drawing negative space, the area in between and around objects that has no name.

Day 3
The Perception of Relational Angles
Taught by Sighting and Proportions. Anchoring the focus.
A lesson in deconstructing, then reconstructing the big picture.

Day 4
The Perception of Light and Shadows
Taught by Light-Logic. The reintroduction of mass.

Day 5
The Perception of the Gestalt
Integration of the above skills. Ge-stalt n. a set of perceptual skills consider as a whole amounting to more than the sum of its parts.

The Beauty of Color Workshop was designed by RBR as a practical five-day basic course in color. It is the next step and follow-up to Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain. This course is suitable for novices in color as well as more experienced artists who may be using color without a clear understanding of how knowledge of color theory can help. Hands-on exercises will focus on how to use basic theory to achieve harmonious color and how to see and efficiently mix specific desired hues. Students will learn about traditional color attributes such as hue, value, intensity and various visual, perceptual and psychological aspects of color.

What is Visual Journal?

Visual Journals are ongoing, uniquely personal, multi-dimensional records of our day-to-day experiences. Explore a myriad of art techniques, page preparations, innovative collages of text and pictures. Whether the images are symbolic or realistic, constructed with careful thought or accidentally from the seat-of-the-pants improvisation, each page chronicles a memory. Our daily excursions, shopping expeditions, mundane memos and receipts provide the inspiration because art is not just something we do, it is something we must do to express who we are. Find out more about Joei's visual journal at HERE.

The focus in this 1-day class is on the versatility of the pencil / tansai-zuri (sumi + light color) / watercolors as a drawing tool: what effects are produced by different pencil techniques and the lines they create when rendering light and shadow? What parts do the light and shadow play in the overall composition? More advanced students can tackle the added challenge of working with colored pencils.
